PART TWO IN BECOMING A WIFE: HOW IT SHAPES ME

June 24, 2018

I wrote about becoming a wife and what it means to me sometime ago. In case you haven’t read it yet, jump to my post right here!

Continuing where I left, there are more lessons that I learned in becoming a wife – and how it shapes the way I see the world. In general, my world changes as I learn how to share.

Now that I have Kalvin as my husband, I learn how to share everything with him – including my time; and I have to say that learning how to share my time with him as a wife is one of the biggest adjustments since investment in a fruitful relationship depends hugely on the time we share with each other.

Other than that, I am also learning (still and will always be) to constantly check myself of the following questions:

AM I RESPONSIBLE?

I believe that being responsible, as the Bible said it, is not about being a working wife. If you were like me, then it is safe to say that we are working wives. But if you are a full-time homemaker, then it is fine too.

All of us – no matter what we do – can be driven and responsible. I believe that as a wife, it is also our responsibility to keep the family financial healthy, for instance to make a sensible decision to invest the money conclusively or spend the money wisely. Don’t spend the money for your selfish ambitions. Being smart and wise is a-must for everyone.

“She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.”

AM I A GOOD EXAMPLE TO OTHER PEOPLE?

1 Timothy 3:11 says, “In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.”

After being trustworthy, good, hardworking and responsible, it is also our duties to be a good example.

Titus 2:4-5 says, “Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”

It is also our duty to help the ones who is less fortunate. I believe that this does not emphasize on the tangible materials – but it heavily emphasizes on having a meek heart. It is that our hearts should be touched by the adversity of others be it emotionally, spiritually or physically.

AM I A GOOD HELPER?

Genesis 2:18 says, “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.’”  God declares that man was never intended to be alone so He creates “a helper suitable for him”.  Marriage is about two people striving together in the world. I have my own dream – and I know Kalvin has his own dream as well. In the Bible, it is mentioned that: “Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.” I believe it is more to do with supporting my husband to pursue his dream so that he will be fully respected in the world. Am I helping Kalvin spiritually? How can I help him to be better each and every day? When Kalvin is spiritually low, I should be the one who help him to be closer to God. Let me encourage you today to be a helper. Why? Because to be a helper is one way to show a characteristic of God.

There are two more points that I’d like to share but I’m keeping them for the next post – so stay tuned!
