When Kalvin and I planned our wedding, there were three huge elements we needed to agree upon. The first one is the size of our wedding. The second one is the venue of our wedding. And lastly, the decoration.
There was no doubt that we wanted an intimate wedding in Bali. So the first and second elements were good to go. But when it came to the third element: decoration, it took us a while to decide the whole concept. We blamed Pinterest for setting an unrealistic expectation in weddings.
So I think it’s safe to say that I understand the frustration of all brides-to-be. That is the reason why today I decide to share the story of our wedding decoration (and how we made it happen).
FIRST: SETTING
The next thing we should decide was the setting. For some people, it goes without saying that Bali weddings should be outdoor weddings. True, but at the moment we also had to consider the type of outdoor wedding we’d like to have: Beach wedding? Garden wedding? Or cliff side wedding?
Eventually we decided to have a cliff side wedding, overlooking the ocean – based on so many considerations. We went to visit a lot of wedding venues in Bali and finally knew that Khayangan Estate was the perfect place for us.
Khayangan Estate is charming and picturesque. It embraced the true colour of Bali and Indonesia, and the backdrop is breathtaking. We really thought that even without elaborated decoration, the venue already had natural beauty.
SECOND: STYLE
And then, we needed to decide on the style. I had always wanted a natural, rustic-styled wedding; so I decided to lean toward leaves and greenery with pops of gold.
THIRD: DECORATION BY DESIGNMILL
Coming from graphic design background, I knew I would be very picky regarding any aesthetic element in my wedding; but the moment I trusted everything to Designmill, Kalvin and I knew we were in good hands.
I wanted my wedding to be very personalised with implied significance. So I requested calligraphy Bible verses along the aisle, holy matrimony arch shaped as triangle, and guests’ place card on stones. Their work were very delicate and intricate – and the whole team was very patient. Honestly, we couldn’t ask for a better decoration team.
FOURTH: LIGHTING BY LIGHTWORKS
Another important thing that affected the whole ambiance was the lighting. Nothing sets the mood for our wedding quite like lighting. And we were lucky to have lightworks in our team. Planning an outdoor party is very tricky. It’s not about putting as much lights as possible, but placing the lights at the right place and spot to create a certain ambience. They created a very romantic and intimate atmosphere during the reception. To make a perfect match with the rustic style, we decided to spread twinkling string lights across our tends and frame the open view of the ocean.
